Social Media in Business

Social Media

According to the website ‘The Social Skinny’ only 27% of small and 34% of medium businesses are using social media for business, this got me thinking about the role of social media in the business world and what my colleagues, my friends and myself personally thought about social media in business and businesses coming up on their personal social media platforms.

So I asked them…

The questions I asked

Q1. Do you think Social Media is necessary in Business & why?

Q2. Does your workplace use social media & do you ever interact with it?

Q3. What industry are you in?

The answers!

Q1. Do you think Social Media is necessary in Business & why?

Everyone I asked said a big YES to this question! They all agreed that social media is a necessary tool for businesses.

Sarah from See Columbia Travel told me a recent article in Forbes magazine said that “the perception of social media marketing has shifted quickly—no longer viewed as a trendy or passing fad, having a flexible and well-managed presence in each of the “big three” (Facebook, Twitter, and Google+) has become a must for any business seeking to secure a place in both the traditional and digital marketplace.” She thinks It’s not enough to just have a store front and a website anymore, potential and existing clients and customers need to be constantly engaged through social media. In the 2012 Social Media Marketing Industry report, it was found that 85% of all businesses that have a dedicated social media platform as part of their marketing strategy reported an increase in their market exposure.

And others agreed, absolutely, as this is currently a place where people are using social media for discounts and advertisements to help drive business into their store when it would normally not be there, hey it’s free marketing right?

When it comes down to it I think we can agree that using Social media as a marketing tool is a great way for businesses to get their name out there and gain customers with discounts, sales and promotions!

Q2. Does your workplace use social media & do you ever interact with it?

When it came to this question the answers were varied, some companies had pages, some didn’t and some people where not quite sure if their company used social media or not.

Almost everyone whose workplace did use social media said that they do not interact with it, stating that their workplace had strict social media policies. Although one or two said they had been tagged in a few workplace photos.

Q3. What industry are you in?

I asked this question mainly because I wanted to see if I had answers from different industries or if all my friends had somehow ended up in similar industries… turns out I have friends in all sorts of workplaces from Retail, Engineering, Car Sales, and the Travel & Tourism industry to name a few!

From this response I felt I had a better understanding of what my friends thought about Businesses using Social Media, but I still wanted to know how they felt about it personally! What they thought when it came up in their feed! So I sent out the following Facebook message

“Hey! Quick question! How do you feel about Business on Facebook? Do their ads annoy you? Or do you enjoy seeing what businesses have to offer?? Curious for a blog post I am currently writing”

It was interesting to see that the response I got was mainly positive but there were a few negatives, it was also quite interesting to see friends like certain comments they agreed with rather than comment themselves. 1 out of the lot said that it annoyed them and Facebook is not a place for business, Although other friends stated that when their favourite business had promotions, they thought it was pretty cool, and they enjoyed to hear what was going on with the businesses they liked, also when there are freebies involved they agreed you can’t really complain! Others agreed that small doses or business that they had personally liked were ok but unnecessary posts and hogging the news feed was frowned upon.

So after hearing/reading all of the feedback I think we can see that there are very many different views on businesses joining the social media arena and you will never convince everyone that Social Media is more than a time waster or just for teenagers! But here are a few more statistics to see if we can convince you otherwise:

91% of online adults use social media regularly

70% of adult social networkers shop online

53% of active adult social networkers follow a brand

57% of marketers acquired customers via blogging

44% acquired customers via Twitter

And the last one that I have to admit made my jaw drop…

(Although I guess it makes sense these days)

There are more devices connected to the Internet than there are people on Earth (source: AllTwitter)
